Back of the FJ Cruiser This Morning |
After the big December storms, Southern California was treated with a clear and somewhat warmer than normal January - the temperatures were hitting the high 70's at the middle of the month. So that made for a lot of quality training outside.
Of the 31 days in January, I trained on 24 of them. Of the 6 off days, 5 where scheduled for rest and I was sick 1 day. All totaled, I ended up getting in just under 44 hours.
I'm pretty happy with the volume for a couple of reasons. First off, my body feels good, and I'm back to the "almost lean" state that I had managed to get to before Thanksgiving. I think a lot of this comes down to keeping most of the running in Z2 so I was able to burn off some excess fat. Secondly, I was able to put up these numbers with little or no conflict with work and family time. Everyone seems happy. So if they are happy, then I am too.
A couple of the January sessions will be fondly remembered. There were a pair of 12 mile runs along the beach that where perfect, and then there was the legendary Santiago Canyon ride with OC Velo (TRI714 knows).
That said, there are a couple of things missing. I need to be swimming more for one. Secondly, I need to find a way to get into the gym at least once a week, even if it's just for a stretching or core session. I could even do this at home.
So all things considered, I'm giving myself an "A" on volume and a "C" on variety. Does this sound about right?

I must say, January was a pretty awesome month in southern CA. I am so glad I moved out of Chicago when I did. They are about to get blasted with 'Snowmageddon'.
5 days....
EEEK!
No I would say more like A on volume and intensity and maybe a B on variety. Our gyms are stupid(but it appears) eveyones gyms are stupid. I just set up a couple of plyo bands in my garage and I bet I get more from them and push/sit ups, than I would from my gym. My gym membrship has become a swim pass and ??
I HAVE NO WISDOM FOR U HERE :(
KEEP IT UP THOUGH.
Wow, crazy volume man.
Sounds like everyone but me had solid Januarys!!! It is good, I can play catch up.
Your run seems to be improving quite a bit too. Hope that your times keep dropping, this is probably going to be a solid year for you man.
You have an FJ Cruiser??? I want Heather to get one but she isn't sold on the gas mileage :( I think they look pretty awesome.
Keep up the good work!
I think you said it perfectly with regard to your training and conflict and everyone seeming happy. It is always a successful training month, in my book, when everyone is still happy with me by the end of it. :)
Proportionately, your training looks about right, and if it's not impacting home or work, then right on. One addition would be getting some moist energy bars into your nutrition plan.
Great month for you! I am so envious of you So-cal kids! No excuses not to be active.
How do you measure your almost lean state?
NICE WORK. I as well need to get into the gym atleast for core work.
Great volume man. Very jealous of the bike and run volume. Dude you need to experience a 40k month in the pool. It will change everything with your swim.
Also, screw the gym it just takes time away from real training. Do Ab Ripper X 3x a week and you'll lean uo the core in no time. Let me know if you need it and I'll burn u a copy!
your assessment is quite fair. I bet you're looking forward to hit the the water 6 hours a week instead f 6 hours a month!, LOL
I'm with Jeff the Carrot Guy. You don't need to go to the gym to do core. I have a little mat at home and do it while watching TV. Once you start, keep doing it, and start seeing the results, you'll be hooked. 2 sets of 50 crunches per day (5 minutes) and you'll be amazed.
I say B+ for Variety. C'mon, you did 3 seperate sports.
This was a solid month with great numbers. To me it looks correct in variety so I would say A. And if the family is happy then that makes it A+
Keep up the great work. I love seeing the twitter posts with your numbers on them.
I think you have done great Patrick.
c? I think you're being way too hard on yourself. Outstanding month Patrick.
