Don't Think 'Cause You Can't See Me That I'm Not Watching

I climbed into my car this morning at 5:15 so I could drive to the airport and catch a 6:45 flight to Oakland.  Did I ever mention I'm not a morning person?  I'm working on it though - getting up early for a race is getting easier and easier.   But this was for work, and I'm just not there yet.

Out of habit I reached for my iPod and hit "shuffle songs".  And the first song that played was this:

Listen to the first guitar riff.  That will wake you up.  And the lyric "Don't think 'cause you can't see me that I'm not watching" is the perfect paranoid companion for driving down dark and empty streets while stopping at red lights that have no reason to be timed that long so early in the morning.

The band is The Cooper Temple Clause, and the name of the song is "Film Maker".  They were big in the UK for about 5 minutes 10 years ago.  Mind you, I'm paid to know this stuff, and I can't say I was ever a big fan.  But there were a couple songs that I thought where great, and this song is one of them.  The live show was good too - I saw them at the Shepherds Bush Empire in London in 2001.

I've always thought that The Cooper Temple Clause was the Velvet Underground if the Velvets became a band after Slayer got popular.  They are really arty and experimental but also really loud and noisy.  And though I like all types of music (I'm listening to Wilco as I type), I must admit I'm partial to weird, experimental stuff that rips your head off.  I think this comes from being a guitar player that was always more interested in making weird noise than being able to play Eddie Van Halen solos note for note.

I'm not sure what ever happened to the band.  I think they put out three albums and then broke up.  Truth be told, I hadn't thought about them for awhile.  But somehow it made it on to my iTunes play-list.  And having it pop up today was perfect timing.

Thanks for reminding me I had a song by them - no idea what it is called but it's great.

Love coming across old bands I used to love - Orange Juice was one of my faves that were never really well known. Thanks for a new obscure band to check out!
