Liquid Tough, The World's First Open Source Recovery Drink

If you read this post a few days ago, you'll remember I mentioned that I am experimenting with my own custom recovery drink.  Essentially, I am mixing soy protein and glutamine with water and pouring it down the hatch - fast - because it tastes like crap.

Today, Kovas was one of only five people who left a comment on my post about a fairly obscure band called The Cooper Temple Clause.  Though it's clear that I shouldn't start an "obscure band of the week" post series, sometimes it's the quality and not the quantity that counts.

Kovas' comment included the words "Orange Juice".  As in the obscure early '80's band from Scotland who's one claim to fame is launching the solo career of the only slightly less obscure Edwyn Collins.  But I wasn't thinking music, oh no.  Instead I had an Eureka moment.  Liquid Tough needed flavor.  Orange juice is tasty.  The protein powder is already vanilla flavored.  And what happens when you mix vanilla and orange?

The answer, my friends, is that you get a creamsicle.  There is little doubt that the creamsicle is the toughest frozen treat out there.  I don't know about you, but if I see somebody eating a one, I avoid eye contact and cross the street.  I wouldn't be surprised if Jeff Irvin has a freezer full of them for the four days a year when he allows his diet to slip.  Because that's how bad-ass creamsicles are.

I'm sure you all want in on the miracle that is Liquid Tough, so here's the secret formula:
- 2 scoops of vanilla flavored protein powder
- 1 scoop of Glutacor or any other powdered glutamine supplement
- 1 scoop of Nature's Greens or your favorite powdered superfood
- 8 oz of water
- 4 oz of orange juice

Put all the ingredients into a shaker and shake it really hard.  Then drink it.
As I make it, Liquid Tough works out to about 210 calories per 12 ounces.  It also packs about a zillion percent of the recommended daily allowance for tons of healthy stuff.

Feel free to improve on the recipe, all I ask is that you email me describing the modifications you made so they may be shared to the benefit of all.

I hope this gets me a mention on Cook, Eat, Train, Race.

You are like a mad scientist. Do you wear saftey goggles when you create these magic potions?

Liguid Tough is the coolest product name I have heard since, well, ever. Looks like the domain is available too.

I like the name... and I can picture the labelling, he he he.
pity you didn't make it to auckland instead of oakland, we had a race you would have enjoyed. it involved swimming at some point

I thought chocolate milk was the original open source recovery drink.

Add egg whites and a blender and you've got yourself an Orange Julius.

Harsh on the Orange Juice career. Soon you'll be telling me not everyone knows who the Angelic Upstarts are (possibly one of the best band names ever).

Sounds interesting enough to try. Maybe I'll make up a batch for after my long race this weekend, I know I'll be needing it. Cheers!

Since it is a recovery drink, shouldn’t have more carbs? How about some pulverized oatmeal.

I love the name and it sounds very yummy now!

Sounds yummy. But I try a stay away from the juices because of the sugar. You could just stick to the water and add a small mandarin sugar free yogurt for smooth texture and similar flavor. Careful with juices.

I just take the Glutamine pill, tastes better and easy! I'll be happy to munch on a creamsicle though :).

I do make a green protein smoothie:
- protein powder (I use Isopure)
- ice
- Acai berry juice
- Chia seeds
- spinach
- a few frozen blackberries
- a little almond milk.
blend. YUM! When I've tried to add L-Glutamine powder in this, it is the worst, thus the pill version.

Please tell me you took my advice and got the formula patented first!!!!

I have been thinking of starting a feature of personal recovery and how people mix/match their powders, fruits and everything.

This will be that kick in the pants to finally do it so your mention is definitely forth coming.

EMZ - Though I don't talk about it, I am THE cook in the house, not to worry. I started buying La Creuset at an early age. There is some legacy there.

Jason - that would be cool. As goofy as I'm being, I thought both Tr-James and Jill's suggestions where awesome..

ha, I take 1/2 those ingredients and let my stomach do the mixing. I may have to add the rest! Thanks for sharing!
