Qualifying For Boston's High Prices

Charles Hotel
So I was sitting here trying to book a flight to Boston with three nights of hotels for April 14th-17th, wondering why everything was so damned expensive.  I make it a game of trying to get the most for the least, and it wasn't going well.  Then I figured out why - The Boston Marathon is the 18th.

Upon realizing this, I started to try and figure out a way to stay for a few extra days to take in the race.  It turns out that I can't, but I will be around Sunday if there are any blog meet-ups planned (and if you'll have me, of course).

I knew that Boston got expensive around the marathon, but until I had to pull out my AMEX card, I never really thought about it.  In the end, I decided to go with the Charles Hotel in Harvard Square and some fairly odd flight times on Virgin America, all for $1300.  I was hoping for a grand and better flights.

I hope anyone traveling to Boston for the marathon ended up doing OK with hotels and such...

Yeah, don't get me wrong, it will be great running it ... but this is basically our vacation this year. Everything seems really expensive.

Would probably be cheaper to head to NYC and take the train to Boston! Are you going for the 5K?

We have the same here in SA with the Comrades Marathon. Suddenly rates rocket over that specific weekend.

Also, the Boston Marathon is in April, so maybe somnething else is going on. The Boston-Hahvahd Regatta?

Wait until you see the local and state taxes added on to the room costs ..... I seriously think my company only does nationals sales meetings in FL and TX for that very reason!

You need to make a friend in Boston and bum their spare bed! :)

I know we are heading to Boston for the marathon and it is costing us a pretty penny. The hotel rate was ridiculous!! I'm just glad I booked our flights before gas prices rose so much.

I heard that Boston is crazy expensive. You have just confirmed it.

My kid really wants to go to BU or Northeastern. Great, that will be super cheap for a visit.

well you will at least be staying in a nice place-
but Boston/Camb is expensive all around anyway no matter what is going on.
I'll be there for a ton of stuff (Dailymile meet up/blogger meet up/cheering on friends) so maybe I'll run into you :D

Next time you might want to consider flying into Providence RI, and staying just across the border in Rhode Island. About an hour drive to Boston and way cheaper for sure!
