Santa Clarita |
After Ian and I had hatched our plan, I informed Mary she was on her own this weekend by peeling three $100 bills off a big ole' stack I have as a result of selling a vehicle today and then handing them to her. I instructed her to "buy something nice". I've always wanted to do that, though it would have been even cooler if there was an extra "0" on those bills - very classy in a Robert De Niro/Casino kind of way. But unfortunately I sold a Toyota Pick-up, not a Porche 911.
Here's the schedule -
Saturday
7:00 AM - 1:00 PM: Me: Ride with OC Velo / Ian: Video Games
1:30 PM - 3:00 PM: Ian's T-Ball Game
4:00 PM - 6:00 PM: Drive to Santa Clarita
6:01 PM - 7:00 PM: Hotel Pool
7:30 PM - 8:30 PM: Dinner at some mutually agreed restaurant, most likely around Magic Mountain
9:00 PM - ??: Marathon card playing session (e.g. War). But I suspect Ian will be asleep by 9:10.
Sunday
8:00 AM - 8:45 AM: Breakfast
9:00 AM - 10:00 AM: Hotel Pool
10:30 AM - 12:30 PM: Race expo & start
1:00 PM - 2:30 PM: Drive to Thousand Oaks/Lunch on the road.
3:00 PM - 4:00 PM: Race Finish
4:30 PM - 6:30 PM: Drive Home
At some point after 10:30 I expect that Craig a/k/a TRI714 will be joining us.
My only concern about the trip? I have this paranoid thought that when Ian and I check into the hotel without a mom in tow someone is going to assume that I have kidnapped the kid and we are on the run. Is that weird?

For some reason I kept thinking "Santa Rita" not "Santa CLArita"... sheesh, I was thinking...why would you want to go to a PRISON? ... okay, it's late...
It sounds like you and Ian will have a blast. Kids love doing the one-on-one trip with dad... I think they like it more than if it were with mom... dads just tend to be more fun.
Just make sure Ian isn't mad at you or you mad at him when you check in... each of you having a more neutral or even happy demeanor will help squash suspicions of abduction :)
Hope it's a great weekend!
Santa Clarita is a well-known fugitive haven. If your disguises are up to snuff, you'll be fine. With your shaved head, you could tell everyone you were Levi or Chris, maybe wear your jersey everywhere?
Sounds like a great weekend and, except for the unfortunate team name, it would be very cool to hang out with the Liquigas guys.
Jealous!
That sounds like a great weekend.
And I did the same thing with Karen but I peeled off $1 from a pile that was smushed in my pocket as I am heading to The Woodlands for IMTX and our boy Jeff, gal Shannon and Guru Bob.
Cool weekend plan! I didn't think about Casino...I thought about the kitchen scene with Ray Leota in Goodfellas... I like the way that scene ends :)
This is all perfect! Love the way you described the handing over of the money. Thanks for the idea! I now have a boys weekend to plan! Have a great weekend!
Well I will be there. However I thought you were calling me about a different ride Saturday ??
As far as the Liquigas Monday gig, My wife of all people is really pressing me to call in sick and go.
You forgot to mention the invite to the Cannondale complimentery food and beverage feast tent ! Yeah US !
this
made
me
happy.
dad/son time = awesome.
love the "buy something nice" comment.
well played. for sure.
on the weird thing . . . just keep calling him "son" and patting him on the head.
good stuff riding with Liquigas!, how cool is that!
PS: Take your NZ jersey, tho.
: )
Just came across you blog and have to admit that I'm majorly jealous. Sounds like an awesome weekends and the right mix of quality time with your son and cycling.
Sounds like a fun trip!!
You totally cracked me up with your "worry" about someone thinking you kidnapped your son!
Hope you had a good time. We're watching today's stage taped right now... and wishing that we could have been out there!
I like to have a rare "Dude's Weekend" with my two boys also.
Hope you had fun. Enjoy your ride tomorrow.
