Thankfully they where dumb thieves...

I don't (think I) do this very often, but last night I forgot to lock my car.  When I came out this morning it was immediately clear that someone had been in there overnight - about half of the contents the glove compartment and most of the center console bin where spread all over the front seats.

I had "oh shit" moment and started going through what was still there.  Though I can't be exactly sure, it doesn't seem like they got much.

Here is what they didn't get:

- IPod
- Transition bag with all my swim stuff except my wetsuit
- "The Who - 30 Years Of Maximum R&B" box set
- Passport (which by me leaving this in the car actually makes me dumber than the thieves)
- Pair of Newtons
- My favorite Capo cycling socks
- Various chargers, USB cables, etc.

Here is what they did get:

- A broken IPod

Clearly, I was extremely lucky.

 The killers

So on the outside chance that these dummies who obviously don't know what's valuable happen to have kept accurate records of what crap they took from each car, I just may sleep on the couch tonight with the killers at my side in case they come back to trade up.

And of course I'll make sure the car is locked.

Glad to hear they didn't grab the good ipod and the passport. Too bad they didn't steal The Who cd's. You would have been better off!

Just gotta be honest, man.

It is amazing that with all the other stuff in your car, they only got away with a broken ipod. Our local radio station has a segment called "dumb crook news." This story seems to apply.

On a personal note, I left my car unlocked one night. They stole my wallet. They sat in another car down the street and went through my wallet, card by card, item by item... and left all of my stuff from my wallet in the neighbor's car. Weird.

clearly they weren't athletes either if they left your Newtons and tri stuff alone! Lucky about the passport though! Yikes!!

Wow! Like Mel said, they were obviously not athletes b/c the tri stuff and Newtons would have been gone for sure! I'm glad they didn't get any of the good stuff!

Gees the nerve. Thank god they didn't get all your valuable stuff.
May they get some incurable itch between their toes :)

You did luck out Patrick! Even though they didn't take anything that was useful, they still deserve the Old Caratunk Curse like the dumbass that stole my husbands cat converter b/c I'm betting they hit tons of cars around yours too.

Buy a lottery ticket..you were lucky. I am totally anal - I always lock my car and door and we live in the world's most boring neighborhood.

All they managed to do is remove a broken ipod from your car, huh? Sounds like the "thieves" actually did you a favor. That could have been sooo much worse!

My buddy left his car unlocked behind his apartment in Chicago a couple months ago and the thieves stole his stereo and then lit the entire interior of his car on fire... wound up doing 16,000 dollars worth of damage (luckily insured)... we're guessing that they were some idiot kids who watch too much CSI and wanted to hide the evidence... either that or they were just some real punks!

Dear Insurance Company:

My brand new Cervelo P4 was stolen from my car. Please send a check so I can replace!

Stupid heelstrikers!

I just wonder about the thieves, who are you, who who?

Nice job on the broken iPod, but you know, they won't get fooled again!

Sorry for the lame jokes. Glad it wasn't trigangstas!

Are you kidding? They took the broken Ipod and left you the working one. How does that happen. You are extremely lucky. Hopefully you and the killers can catch them.

Bummer, yet bonus at the same time.

Nice job on getting lucky.

I forgot my iphone in my car last night. I was scared someone would brake in to get it. I was lucky and nobody did. I live in the city which is just swarming with thieves.

Happy to hear that they didn't take anything of great value.

I think the question is “Why do you have a broken iPod?” Question number 2: “Why did you buy another iPod after the first one broke?”

I am glad the impact was small. Check the trunk to make sure the thieves aren’t still hanging around.

This post made my heart race. They got what they deserved, and hopefully they tripped and fell as the skipped away with that broken ipod!

so freaking crazy.

I'm just happy to know your shirt stash wasn't in there. Did I mention I love mine?

Had three [yes three] people comment on my shirt in ONE trip to the grocery store!!

One lucky person! As someone else pointed out, I'm so glad the shirt giveaways weren't taken!

That sucks that it happened, but karma handed out its wrath right away to him.

you were quite lucky. I'd try to put a photo of the killers on the rear window saying "this car is fitted with an anti-thief device". It'll surelly stop this kind of incidents.
oh.... and locking your car.

Yes, I agree, you were freaking lucky! If it makes you feel better, the same thing happened to me a few years ago. Live and learn:)

On the bright side, they helped you get rid of an iPod wihtout having to worry about taking it to the toxic waste disposal!

Now if they got that Who collection - I'd be looking for them to make a special deal!

you lucked out! glad they were complete idiots. although yes you aren't too far behind leaving your passport in the car ;)
