Iron Christmas Day One

The Goal:
Tuesday 12/21 - Run 8 or 9 miles after work, most likely in the middle of a rain & wind storm.  Great.
The Result:  8.13 Miles/1:03:45/7:50 per mile pace

Just before the run.
Day one of the Iron Christmas Virtual Triathlon is in the books and so far, so good.  I got 1/2 lucky during the run - though it was raining (hard at times) there was little wind.

I went out about 4 PM and did a big loop which is pretty flat save for 70-80 feet of climbing in the first 3 miles.  Knowing I was going to get soaked, I wore a semi-retired pair of Newtons.  I considered tights, but then realized having wet lycra stuck to my legs would feel gross.  So I went for shorts instead.  On top I put on a Craft base layer first and then a long-sleeved tech tee.  I considered wearing my cycling jacket but nixed that figuring that I'd probably overheat.  The clothing choices worked out and I ended up being completely comfortable.  By the way, I'm sorry I am going on about what I wore, it's just  that I usually don't have to think about it this much.

Anyhow, it was pouring for the first 4 miles.  I had clear lenses in my glasses in attempt to keep the rain out of my eyes, but they just kept fogging up.  This "accessorizing in inlcement weather" faux pas has been noted and will not happen again.

By mile 5 the rain had tapered to a drizzle and by the time I was done it had stopped completely.  But I was still soaked.  Instead of running straight home, I detoured to Ian's School to pick him up.  When I walked into the kids club I was a complete mess and dripping a mixture of sweat and rain water.  My shoes where muddy and my Ipod was loud.  I know I scared the hell out of at least 3 kids, and it may have been more.

Just to prove it was raining
Tomorrow I'm supposed to do the swim and finish the run.  Getting the run in is now looking questionable, but I've got the swim covered.  Regardless I'll get this done by Friday.

Good luck on this nice virtual race. Here it's raining too and for the first time after an age we saw the snow. Crazy seasons.
Happy Christmas to you and family from Italy.

Good workout in the rain...all to go scare some kids! This virtual race is a great one and I think this time of the year a lot of people need something like this.

I love rain running just as long at it's not too chilly. In MS we don't really have much of a choice. Nice pace on that run, even in the funky conditions! Cheers! Have a happy holiday!

I was cracking up reading about the clothing selection, normally not too much of a problem for you guys! I am that way when it is cold here? Lots of thought has to go into it for me and surely someone in colder climate would think it is just normal?

Is everything by your house ok? I saw on the news this AM a state of emergency was being declared in places. Hope all is ok by your place.

I am loving this virtual 70.3. I got the swim done and will have the run done tomorrow. The bike is going to be tough for me as there isn't much on the training schedule for that.

Any day you get a planned workout in and expand children's horizons is a good day.

I wouldn't have believed it was raining unless you took that picture. :) Rain is so much more tolerable than wind.

Does Chris K know about you running in the rain and not melting? I would have like to see all the kids (and teachers) faces when you walked into class. Funny.

You may get some bonus time for scaring kids.

Nice job in the rain. I walk into school twice a week after running and am wide open to the tormential comments from grade 7 and 8. However, they just ask the obvious: were you really out running in the cold/rain? At least I'm not getting any squeals!

Looks like you could swim outside in the puddles! :( Congrats on getting wet... and getting the run done! :) Hope you have a great holiday!

What?! You can run in the rain? Thanks for making me look ever more like a wuss Patrick :-) I DO have 3 hours on the treadmill already this week. It's okay, I'm fine with it, I simply don't like running in the rain. At least I don't blow off my workout. Kudos to you. Great, fast, run.

I actually appreciate you posting about your clothes, since I'm still trying to figure all that out. Of course, our temperatures have been below freezing, so I guess I'll have to look elsewhere for that kind of help.
